Why people look for a MarketMuse alternative
First, price you cannot see. MarketMuse lists what each plan includes, but on 30 September 2026 every tier on its pricing page, the free one included, led to "Book a demo". If you want to compare costs before a sales call, that rules it out.
Second, what it is for. MarketMuse is strongest at site-level planning: an inventory of your pages, tracked topics, and strategy documents that say where coverage is thin. The briefs are counted, 5 a month on Optimize and 20 on Strategy, and the writing is left to you.
So "alternative" usually means one of two things: a tool that does one part of the job at a price you can read, or a tool that goes past the plan and produces the content.
The seven alternatives
1. AltoRank: the plan turned into drafts
Ours, and a different shape from MarketMuse. AltoRank builds a business and voice profile from a site's published writing, researches what its buyers search, plans a calendar and drafts each article with sources attached. Every publish is attributed to a named person: a click on that draft, or a rule that emails each draft and ships it after a 24-hour hold unless they hold it. It has no site inventory or topic-authority scoring like MarketMuse's, and its AI-mention tracker is built but not yet switched on. Open source under AGPL-3.0, free to self-host, €69/mo managed or €199/mo on Agency for unlimited client workspaces and 400 articles.
2. Keyword Insights: planning by clustering
The closest to MarketMuse's planning job: it clusters keywords by search intent so thousands of terms become a list of pages to write, with briefs, a writing assistant and an AI writing agent on the same credits. Basic $58/mo for 10,000 credits, Professional $99/mo for 20,000, Enterprise custom. Clustering costs 1 credit a keyword, a brief 100, the writing assistant 200 an article and the AI writing agent 1,200 an article. Read from keywordinsights.ai/pricing on 28 September 2026.
3. Frase: plan, draft and publish in one tool
Briefs, drafts, SEO and GEO scores, self-serve publishing to four CMSs or its own, AI visibility tracking and decay alerts, with a content calendar from Professional up. Starter $39/mo billed yearly for 1 seat, 1 site and 10 articles; Professional $103; Scale $239 for 5 seats and up to 10 domains. Read from frase.io/pricing on 28 September 2026. See the Frase alternatives for where it falls short.
4. Surfer: the content score, with coverage gaps
The reference for scoring a draft against what ranks, with AI visibility tracking built in; its Pro plan adds content ideas, a coverage gap report and a cannibalization report, which reach toward planning. Discovery €49/mo billed yearly, Standard €99, Pro €182, Peace of Mind €299, Enterprise custom. Read from surferseo.com/pricing on 30 September 2026. It has its own roundup of alternatives.
5. Clearscope: grading with unlimited seats
Grades content your writers write and recommends terms from search intent, with query tracking across ChatGPT and Gemini. Essentials $129/mo for 50 tracked queries, 50 pages, 20 topic explorations and 20 drafts a month; Business $399/mo. Unlimited users and projects, no contracts, a 14-day trial. Read from clearscope.io/pricing on 30 September 2026. It has its own roundup of alternatives.
6. Content Harmony: briefs priced per piece
Each "content workflow" is a keyword report, a brief and a grader for one page, and you pay by how many you use: $99/mo, about $89/mo billed annually, at roughly $8 a workflow on the entry plan. Unlimited users and projects, and credits roll over for 90 days. The trial is $10 for your first 10 workflows. Read from contentharmony.com/pricing on 28 September 2026. The straight swap if MarketMuse's briefs were what you used most.
7. Dashword: briefs your agent can drive
Content briefs, an AI writer and content scoring, with the API and an MCP server on every plan. Startup $99/mo for 30 content reports and 5 seats; Business from $349/mo for 100 reports, 10 seats and SSO. Scoring is free and unlimited; only reports use credits. The first report is free with no card. Read from dashword.com/pricing on 30 September 2026.

What MarketMuse includes, since it does not say what it costs
Read from marketmuse.com/pricing on 30 September 2026:
- Free. 1 user, 10 queries a month, no site inventory, no tracked topics and no briefs; Topic Navigator, Keywords, SERP X-Ray and heatmaps.
- Optimize. 1 user, 1 site inventory, 100 tracked topics, 100 queries, 5 article briefs and 1 content strategy document a month.
- Research. 3 users, 1,000 tracked topics, unlimited queries, 10 briefs and 3 strategy documents a month.
- Strategy. 5 users, 10,000 tracked topics, unlimited queries, 20 briefs across all nine brief types and 5 strategy documents a month.
Every tier, the free one included, led to "Book a demo" rather than a price. Each paid plan covers one site inventory.
When MarketMuse is the better choice
If you run a large site and the question is which topics you own and where coverage is thin, MarketMuse is built for exactly that, and none of the tools above models a whole site the same way. Take the demo. If the question is what to publish this month and who signs it off, a tool with a published price will get you there sooner.
Common questions
What is the best MarketMuse alternative?
It depends which half of MarketMuse you use. For planning, Keyword Insights clusters keywords into topics you can act on. For briefs, Content Harmony or Dashword. For grading drafts, Clearscope or Surfer. For one tool that plans, drafts and publishes, Frase. For the plan turned into drafts with a named person behind every publish, and the option to self-host, AltoRank.
Is there a cheaper alternative to MarketMuse?
Probably, but MarketMuse does not say what it costs. On 30 September 2026 marketmuse.com/pricing listed a free plan and three paid tiers, Optimize, Research and Strategy, each behind "Book a demo". Tools that publish prices start lower: Frase at $39/mo billed yearly and Keyword Insights at $58/mo (both read 28 September), Surfer at €49/mo billed yearly and Dashword at $99/mo (30 September). AltoRank is free to self-host, or €69/mo managed.
How much does MarketMuse cost?
It does not publish paid prices. Read from marketmuse.com/pricing on 30 September 2026: a Free plan with 1 user and 10 queries a month; Optimize with 1 user, 100 tracked topics, 5 briefs and 1 strategy document a month; Research with 3 users, 1,000 tracked topics, 10 briefs and 3 strategy documents; Strategy with 5 users, 10,000 tracked topics, 20 briefs, all nine brief types and 5 strategy documents. Every tier, the free one included, routes to "Book a demo".
What does MarketMuse do that the others do not?
Site-level planning. It inventories a site, tracks topics across it and produces content strategy documents that say where coverage is thin, which is a different job from grading one page. Keyword Insights comes closest by clustering keywords; Surfer Pro lists content ideas and a coverage gap report. The graders in this list mostly work one page at a time.
How is AltoRank different from MarketMuse?
MarketMuse tells a team what to write and hands the writing to them. AltoRank researches what a site's buyers search, plans a calendar and drafts each article in the site's voice with sources attached, and every publish is attributed to a named person: a click, or a rule that emails each draft and holds it 24 hours. It has no site inventory or topic-authority scoring like MarketMuse's. It is open source and self-hostable, with a published price.
Is AltoRank really open source?
Yes, AGPL-3.0, covering the whole product. There is no ee/ directory and no tier held back from the source. The repository is public at github.com/AltoRank/altorank and the MCP server is in the official registry as co.altorank/altorank.
See your site the way an assistant does
A plan only matters once a page can be read. The free check reads your homepage, robots.txt, sitemap.xml and llms.txt and tells you, line by line, what is missing.
Nine checks on the homepage, robots.txt, sitemap.xml and llms.txt. No account, no email gate, and a link you can share. The scoring is in the open-source code, so it can be read rather than trusted.
