Surfer SEO alternatives for agencies (2026)

The short answer: Surfer is an optimisation layer, and a mature one: you bring a draft, it scores it against what ranks and tracks the page afterwards. The right alternative depends on which half you are replacing. For the editor and score, Clearscope or Page Optimizer Pro, or NeuronWriter if price decides it. For drafting and publishing too, Frase. For agencies that want the research and the draft done, with a person approving every publish and the option to self-host, AltoRank. Eight tools below, each with its price and the job it wins.

Is there anything better than Surfer SEO?

At the thing Surfer is known for, a live content score against the current SERP, not clearly. It has been doing it for years and its Content Editor is the reference the others are measured against. Surfer has also moved into AI visibility, tracking brand mentions across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Mode, AI Overviews and Gemini. That is the honest starting point.

Where it is beaten is on the jobs either side of the score. Surfer assumes a draft already exists. If the bottleneck is producing the draft, Frase, Scalenut and AltoRank all write one. If the bottleneck is price, three tools below start under Surfer's €99 Standard plan. And if you want to read the code or run it on your own infrastructure, only AltoRank offers that.

So "better than Surfer" is answerable, but only once you say whether you need a score, a draft, or both.

The eight alternatives

1. AltoRank: the draft done, a person approving it

Ours, so read the rest of the page before weighing this. AltoRank starts from your site: it crawls it, builds a business and voice profile from what you have published, researches the questions your buyers search, and drafts in your voice with sources attached. Every draft is held for approval, and every publish is attributed to a person, either a click or a rule they set. It has no content score, and its AI-mention tracker is built but not yet switched on. Open source under AGPL-3.0, free to self-host, €69/mo managed for 100 articles or €199/mo on Agency for unlimited client workspaces and 400 articles. Pick it if producing the draft is the bottleneck. Skip it if you want a score to write against.

2. Frase: the closest all-rounder

The nearest thing on this page to AltoRank, and the most complete Surfer alternative. Starter is $39/mo billed yearly ($49 monthly) for one seat, one site and 10 articles a month; Professional $103/mo yearly for 3 seats, 5 sites and 40 articles; Scale $239/mo yearly for 5 seats, up to 10 domains, 100 articles and exportable client reports; Enterprise custom, with white-label reports and SSO. SEO and GEO scores, AI visibility tracking, publishing to WordPress, Webflow, Sanity or Wix, and an MCP server and CLI on every plan. Its pricing page says the agent "publishes on its own when you let it". A 7-day trial with no card. Read from frase.io/pricing on 25 September 2026.

3. Clearscope: grading for writer-led teams

The alternative for teams where people do the writing and want a grade and recommendations, not a machine draft. Essentials is $129/mo for 50 tracked queries, 50 pages and 20 drafts a month; Business $399/mo for 300 tracked queries and pages plus a dedicated account manager; Enterprise custom. Every plan includes unlimited users and projects, query tracking across ChatGPT and Gemini, and no contracts. A 14-day free trial. Read from clearscope.io/pricing on 25 September 2026. More expensive than Surfer at the entry tier; the unlimited seats are what make it work for an agency with many writers. It has its own roundup of alternatives.

4. NeuronWriter: the lower-cost editor

The tool Reddit threads about cheaper Surfer alternatives recommend most often: a content editor scoring against the SERP, plus AI monitoring across Google, AI Overviews, AI Mode, ChatGPT and Perplexity as an add-on from $9/mo. Its plan prices did not render to a plain read of neuronwriter.com/pricing on 25 September 2026 (only the add-on showed), so check the page before budgeting rather than trusting a figure here.

5. MarketMuse: planning across a large site

Less an editor than a content strategist: it models topics across your whole site and tells you where coverage is thin. A free plan with one user and 10 queries a month; paid tiers, Optimize, Research and Strategy, scale by tracked topics (100, 1,000 and 10,000), content briefs (5, 10 and 20 a month) and users (1, 3 and 5). Paid prices were not published on marketmuse.com/pricing on 25 September 2026; every paid tier routes to a demo. The right pick when the question is what to write across hundreds of pages, not how to score one. It has its own roundup of alternatives.

6. Scalenut: volume per dollar

Built around producing GEO articles in bulk. Three tiers on monthly billing, $59, $89 and $199 a month, with the page listing 5–10, 30–60 and 75–150 GEO articles a month per tier, plus article optimisation, content audits and keyword clustering. The page also showed lower figures of $24, $36 and $80 beside them whose billing terms it did not make clear to a plain read, so treat those as a promotion to confirm. Read from scalenut.com/pricing on 25 September 2026.

7. Page Optimizer Pro: unlimited on-page reports

For people who tune pages against the top-ranking results and want to run that as often as they like. The Unlimited plan is $62/mo, or $739 paid annually, and Team $119/mo, or $1,425 annually; both cover unlimited domains and unlimited POP and Watchdog reports, with extra seats at $12/mo. Other tools, including the AI writer, run on credits at $15 per 10. Read from pageoptimizer.pro/pricing on 25 September 2026. The purest like-for-like for Surfer's editor on this page.

8. Rankability: an editor sold to agencies

A content optimiser positioned squarely at agencies, and the author of one of the Surfer-alternative roundups that ranks for this query. Its pricing URL redirected to a "book an agency demo" page on 25 September 2026 with no published price, so it is a sales conversation. Worth a look if you want a Surfer-style workflow packaged with agency onboarding.

Not listed: Jasper, which is a broader marketing suite and has its own comparison, and Semrush, whose content toolkit is one part of a much larger suite.

When Surfer is the better choice

If your writers already produce good drafts and what they lack is a target to write towards, keep Surfer. A live score against the current SERP is its core, it is mature, and nothing here, AltoRank included, replaces it like for like except Page Optimizer Pro and Clearscope.

The same goes if AI visibility tracking is what you are buying. Surfer tracks brand mentions across five AI surfaces with daily refresh on its higher plans. AltoRank checks whether a page is readable by an assistant; its AI-mention tracker is built but not yet switched on.

Common questions

What is the best Surfer SEO alternative?

It depends which half of Surfer you are replacing. For the content editor and score, Clearscope and Page Optimizer Pro are the closest like-for-like, and NeuronWriter is the cheaper option people recommend most often. For something that also drafts and publishes, Frase is the closest all-rounder. For agencies that want the research and the first draft done, with a person approving every publish and the option to self-host, that is what AltoRank does.

Is there a cheaper alternative to Surfer SEO?

Yes. Read from each vendor's own pricing page on 25 September 2026: Frase starts at $39/mo billed yearly, Scalenut at $59/mo billed monthly, and Page Optimizer Pro at $62/mo billed yearly, against Surfer's Standard plan at €99/mo billed yearly (Discovery is €49). MarketMuse has a free plan limited to 10 queries a month. AltoRank is free to self-host, or €69/mo managed with model and search-data costs included.

How much does Surfer SEO cost?

Read from surferseo.com/pricing on 20 September 2026, in EUR, billed yearly: Discovery €49/mo, AI Search Analytics €82/mo, Standard €99/mo, Pro €182/mo, Peace of Mind €299/mo, and Enterprise from €999/mo. Monthly billing costs more. Prices are shown in your own currency and change, so check their page before quoting it.

Which Surfer alternative is best for agencies?

Frase's Scale plan is built for it: $239/mo billed yearly for 5 seats, up to 10 domains, 100 articles a month and exportable client reports. Clearscope includes unlimited users on every plan, which suits agencies with many writers. AltoRank's Agency plan is €199/mo for unlimited workspaces, one per client, and 400 articles a month, and it is the only one here you can run on your own infrastructure.

Is AltoRank a replacement for Surfer's content score?

No, and we would rather say so. Surfer's Content Editor scores a draft against what is currently ranking and gives live guidelines as you write. AltoRank has nothing equivalent. It decides what to write and produces the draft, with citations you can check. Some teams run both.

How does AltoRank differ from Frase?

They are closer than any other pair on this page. Both draft, both publish to a CMS, both ship an MCP server and a CLI. Frase's pricing page says its agent "publishes on its own when you let it". In AltoRank every publish is attributed to a person, either a click on that draft or a rule they set that holds it for review first. Frase tracks AI visibility today; AltoRank's AI-mention tracker is built but not yet switched on. AltoRank is open source and self-hostable and Frase is not.

Is AltoRank really open source?

Yes, AGPL-3.0, covering the whole product: multi-client workspaces, white-label reporting, the approval gate and the scoring. There is no ee/ directory and no tier held back from the source. The repository is public at github.com/AltoRank/altorank and the MCP server is in the official registry as co.altorank/altorank.

See your site the way an assistant does

A content score only matters once a page can be read. The free check reads your homepage, robots.txt, sitemap.xml and llms.txt and tells you, line by line, what is missing.

Nine checks on the homepage, robots.txt, sitemap.xml and llms.txt. No account, no email gate, and a link you can share. The scoring is in the open-source code, so it can be read rather than trusted.
