Reading level checker: the score, and the sentences behind it.

Paste a draft to get its Flesch reading ease, Flesch-Kincaid grade and average sentence length, with every sentence over your chosen length listed longest first. The list is the useful part: it is what you edit.

What you can do with it

  • Bring a technical page down to a level a buyer can read
  • Find the run-on sentences in a draft before editing it
  • Check copy against a style guide's reading level target
  • Compare the reading level of two versions of a page

How it works, step by step

  1. 1

Paste at least a few paragraphs of prose

The formulas need at least 20 words and work better with a few hundred. Lists and headings distort the result, so paste the body text.

  2. 2

    Read the average sentence length

It is the input you control most directly. Around 15 to 20 words is comfortable for most readers; averages above 25 are where scores fall fast.

  3. 3

    Set the long-sentence threshold

Flag sentences over 20, 25 or 30 words. Start at 25; drop to 20 when the page is for a general audience or will mostly be read on a phone.

  4. 4

    Split the longest sentences first

The list is sorted longest first. Splitting the top three usually moves the score more than any change of vocabulary.

  5. 5

Re-check, and stop at the band

Aim for a band, not a number. Once the grade is in the range your audience reads comfortably, further simplification starts costing precision.

The score is made of two numbers

Both Flesch formulas use only two measurements: how many words per sentence, and how many syllables per word. Everything else about your writing is invisible to them. That is their weakness, since a string of short nonsense sentences scores as very readable. It is also why they are useful: the two inputs are the two things you can change mechanically.

Of the two, sentence length has more leverage in practice. Vocabulary is often fixed by the subject: a page about “authentication” has to say authentication. Sentence length is almost always a choice. That is why this checker lists your long sentences, longest first, rather than just printing a grade.

How to edit toward a band

  1. Paste the draft and note the Flesch-Kincaid grade and average sentence length.
  2. Split the three longest sentences in the list. Most long sentences are two or three ideas joined by commas or “and”; they come apart cleanly.
  3. Re-check. If the grade is in the band your readers need, stop.
  4. Only then look at long words, and replace the ones that have a plain equivalent that means the same thing. Keep the ones that are the precise term.

What readability does not measure

A readable page can still be wrong, thin or off-topic. Readability is a finishing check, run once a draft covers what it should. The word counter gives the broader picture of a draft’s length and reading time, and a content brief is where you decide what the draft should cover in the first place.

Frequently asked questions

What is Flesch reading ease?

A 0 to 100 score, higher meaning easier, calculated as 206.835 − 1.015 × (words per sentence) − 84.6 × (syllables per word). Scores of 60 to 70 correspond to plain English that most adults read comfortably.

What is the Flesch-Kincaid grade level?

The same two inputs with different weights: 0.39 × (words per sentence) + 11.8 × (syllables per word) − 15.59. The result is a US school grade, so 8.0 means text a typical eighth-grader can follow.

What reading level should web content aim for?

For most commercial and general pages, a Flesch-Kincaid grade of about 7 to 9, or reading ease of 60 to 70. Technical documentation for specialists can sit higher without harm. Consistency across a site matters as much as the number.

Does it work for languages other than English?

Not well. Both formulas and the syllable counter were built for English, and other languages have different word and syllable lengths. Adapted formulas exist for some languages, but this tool does not implement them, so a German or Italian score here is not meaningful.

Why does my grade differ from another checker?

Syllable counting without a pronunciation dictionary is a guess, and tools guess differently, as they do in splitting sentences on abbreviations. The direction of change as you edit is more reliable than the exact number.
